Wool Carpet Specialists Since 1865
Godfrey Hirst is the world’s largest wool carpet manufacturer — an Australian wool house with roots back to 1865, now part of Mohawk. We stock and install its New Zealand wool broadloom across New Jersey.
Godfrey Hirst is one of the oldest names in flooring, with a heritage that reaches back to 1865 and one of Australia’s first textile mills in Geelong, Victoria. The company’s founder was a Yorkshire-trained weaver, and that wool-craft DNA never left: after shifting its focus to carpet in 1966 and expanding into New Zealand, Godfrey Hirst grew into the leading flooring manufacturer in Australia and New Zealand. In 2018 it joined Mohawk Industries — which is how a wool house with 160 years of history ended up in New Jersey showrooms like ours, backed by the world’s largest flooring company without losing what makes it different.
What makes it different is wool. Godfrey Hirst is the largest wool carpet manufacturer in the world, running more than six million kilos of scoured wool through its mills every year. Its wool carpets are designed and made in Auckland from wool grown on New Zealand farms — a genuinely natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber. Wool naturally repels most liquid spills, resists dust mites and bacteria, and is naturally flame resistant; a single strand can be flexed thirty thousand times and still spring back. That resilience is why a good wool carpet keeps its look for decades instead of years.
The lineup we carry through Mohawk covers both sides of the buying decision. If you want the real thing, collections like Woolscapes, French Knot, Chelsea Row, and Wool Fundamentals range from clean classic loops to patterned, dimensional textures with a tailored, high-end feel. If your household leans harder on the floor — kids, pets, traffic — Godfrey Hirst also builds carpets on SmartStrand triexta (a fiber made with 37% renewable plant-based content) and EverLux nylon, so you get the brand’s design sensibility with engineered stain performance.
Sustainability here isn’t a marketing coat of paint: Godfrey Hirst’s Auckland tufting and distribution facilities are carbon neutral, and its carpets carry ECS Level 4 environmental certification — the highest level available — with select products certified Declare Red List Free. If you’re weighing wool against synthetic, stop by and we’ll walk you through the Godfrey Hirst range side by side.
